AIBE Previous Year Papers: How to Actually Use Them
Past papers are one of the best ways to prepare for the All India Bar Examination — if you use them right. Here is what they reveal, an important catch after the new criminal codes, and how to practise equivalent questions free with source-anchored mock tests.
Where to find the official papers
After each edition, the Bar Council of India typically publishes the official question paper and answer key on the official AIBE website (allindiabarexamination.com / barcouncilofindia.org). That is the only authoritative source, and availability varies from edition to edition — so always download past papers from there rather than from unofficial copies floating around, which are often incomplete or wrong.
Vidhi does not host the official papers. What it gives you instead is original, exam-style practice — with every answer traced to the exact statutory provision, which is what actually builds the skill the paper tests.
What past papers reveal
Individual questions rarely repeat word-for-word, but the shape of the exam is remarkably stable across editions:
- The pattern: 100 MCQs, 3 hours 30 minutes, open book, no negative marking.
- The weightage: the criminal codes and the Constitution carry the heaviest load; the rest is spread across roughly 19 core subjects.
- The style: most questions are application- and section-based — they reward knowing where a rule lives in the bare Act, not rote memory.
So the real value of a past paper is diagnostic: it shows you the pattern and where your weak subjects are. See the full exam pattern →
Important: older papers are now partly outdated
This is the catch most sites don’t mention. On 1 July 2024, the BNS, BNSS and BSA replaced the IPC, CrPC and Indian Evidence Act. That means criminal-law questions in any paper from before mid-2024 cite repealed sections — an old question asking about “IPC Section 302” is no longer how the exam frames it (murder is now BNS Section 103).
The pattern and the non-criminal subjects in old papers are still useful, but for criminal law you should practise on the current codes. See what changed with the new criminal codes →
How to use previous year papers (a method)
- Sit it like the real thing. Time yourself for 3½ hours and keep your bare Acts open — that is the exam you are training for.
- Attempt every question. With no negative marking, a blank is a wasted mark; a reasoned guess can only help.
- Analyse, don’t just tick answers. Note which subjects cost you marks and which slowed you down — that is your revision list.
- Trace each answer to its provision. Find the exact section behind every answer in the bare Act; that is how the reasoning — and the section numbers — stick.
- Update the criminal-law answers. For any pre-2024 paper, re-map criminal questions to the current BNS/BNSS/BSA provisions.
Better than hunting for old PDFs
Because exact questions rarely repeat and older criminal-law questions are now outdated, chasing every past PDF has limited returns. What compounds is volume of fresh, exam-style practice on the current syllabus — with the answer tied to the provision so you learn the law, not a memorised key.
That is exactly what Vidhi is: a growing bank of hundreds of questions across all 22 subjects, drawn into fresh randomised 25-question mocks, each anchored to the current statutory provision. Start a free mock test →
Frequently asked questions
Are AIBE previous year papers available?
Yes. The Bar Council of India publishes the official question paper and answer key for many AIBE editions on the official AIBE website after the exam. Availability varies by edition, so check the official site. Vidhi does not host the official papers — it provides original, source-anchored practice instead.
Do the same questions repeat in the AIBE?
Rarely word-for-word. What repeats is the exam pattern, the subject weightage and the style of questions. So the best use of past papers is to learn the recurring concepts and section-based reasoning — not to memorise specific answers.
Are old AIBE papers still useful after the new criminal codes?
Only partly. The exam pattern and the non-criminal subjects still apply, but questions from before 1 July 2024 that cite the IPC, CrPC or Indian Evidence Act are now outdated — the exam is set on the BNS, BNSS and BSA. Use current-code practice for criminal law.
What is the AIBE exam pattern?
100 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours 30 minutes, open book, with no negative marking, out of 100 marks. Passing is 45/100 for General and OBC candidates and 40/100 for SC, ST and Persons with Disabilities.
How should I use AIBE previous year papers?
Attempt them timed and open-book, just like the real exam. Then analyse which subjects cost you marks, and trace each answer back to its bare-Act provision so the reasoning sticks — rather than simply checking the answer key.
Where can I practise AIBE-style questions for free?
On Vidhi — fresh, randomised mock tests across all 22 syllabus subjects, each question anchored to the exact current statutory provision, with instant provision-cited explanations.
